20 die in Uttar Pradesh rain

New Delhi: Torrential rain and squalls left 20 people dead in Uttar Pradesh since Saturday evening, but kept the mercury at bearable levels at several places, even as the sun on Sunday beat down hard on vast swathes of North India where Amritsar reeled at 44.4 degree Celsius.

The death toll from heavy downpours and thunderstorms in Uttar Pradesh climbed to 50 in the past fortnight.

However, temperatures hovered around 40 degree Celsius at many places in the State. Lucknow and Bareilly recorded day temperatures of 39.4 and 39.6 degrees. — PTI
