TIRUCHI: Security inside the Central Prison here has been enhanced with the installation of surveillance cameras. Three ‘pan tilt zoom’ (PTZ) surveillance cameras have been fixed at vantage points in the prison which accommodates over 1,500 under-trials, remand prisoners and convicts. While one camera has been installed inside the main administrative prison building, two cameras have been fixed inside the ‘interview room’ where visitors meet the inmates every day. Costing Rs. 5.80 lakh, the three cameras are connected to the Superintendent of Prison’s Office inside the prison as well as the Prison Control Room inside which a 42-inch screen has been installed to keep a constant tab on the movements within the jail. The PTZ cameras, which were inaugurated by the Director General of Police (Prison) R. Nataraj, a few days ago, not only enable the authorities to monitor the movement of prisoners but those of jail staff, prison authorities told The Hindu. About 250 visitors visit the prison every day to see the prisoners. The visitors are permitted to meet the inmates from Monday to Friday during prison hours as well as the first Sunday of every month. The articles brought by the visitors are checked through the x-ray scanner installed to prevent smuggling of prohibited items inside the prison.
