Don’t delay women’s quota Bill: Yechury

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded that the United Progressive Alliance government introduce the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament soon.

Polit Bureau member and MP Sitaram Yechury, in an informal chat with journalists here on Sunday, said the Centre should not delay the introduction of the Bill on the pretext that some parties were opposing it.

“There are parties which are opposing the Bill and those which are in favour of it. Let the people know who are opposing it and who is supporting.”

He said the party started an analysis of the Lok Sabha election results and was eliciting opinions from its State units. The central committee was scheduled to meet from June 19 to 21, and the meeting would go into all issues.

Asked about CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan’s comments that the Left parties’ withdrawal of support to the UPA over the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal was not right, he said: “We will discuss the matter with them [the CPI leadership].”
