Mumbai: In a major embarrassment to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), its MP Padamsinh Patil was arrested by the CBI on Saturday night for his alleged involvement in the murder of his cousin and Congress leader Pawanraje Nimbalkar. He was arrested from his son Jagjitsingh Patil’s official residence. A Panvel court in Navi Mumbai remanded him to CBI custody till June 14. Mr. Patil has been found to be involved in a case of criminal conspiracy under Section 120 B and murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, CBI joint director Rishi Raj Singh told the media. As per parliamentary rules, a report on Mr. Patil’s involvement was sent to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, he said. On May 25, the CBI arrested Parasmal Jain and Mohan Shukla in the case relating to the killing of Nimabalkar and his driver at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai in 2006. During their interrogation, they allegedly stated that Mr. Patil paid Rs. 30 lakh as ‘supari’ (contract killing) money. Social activist Anna Hazare, who launched a corruption campaign against Mr. Patil, was also said to be on the hit-list. However, the assassins reportedly refused to murder Mr. Hazare. NCP chief and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar told The Hindu on phone from New Delhi that the party had not taken any decision on the matter. “This is the initial stage. Let us see what the final case is. Let us see what happens.”
