Schoolchildren do their bit to protect greenery in the city

BANGALORE: About 500 saplings were planted in the Madiwala park by students of Buddha Education Society on Sunday as a part of World Environment Day.

Nearly 200 students from the society planted saplings during Vana Mahotsavam, an initiative of Ikyatha, a citizen’s forum. A rally was organised to create awareness among people on the importance of preserving the greenery of the city.

The rally which began at Buddha Education Society ended at Madiwala park. The children displayed banners such as ‘Take care of the earth, she will take care of you’ and ‘We want to have a society, do not destroy the environment’. “We want to make a difference to the society,” a very excited Roopini G. said.

Byatarayanapura MLA Krishna Byre Gowda and his wife, Meenakshi Seshadri, interacted with the children and spoke to them on various problems that the city was facing.

He highlighted the need to save the environment from further damage. The residents of BTM Layout area joined the children and planted a sapling each on their part to help the cause.

BTM Layout MLA Ramalinga Reddy spoke at length on pollution and urged the youngsters to protect the greenery of the city.

“Deforestation in the name of development has resulted in increasing temperature. As young people we can contribute most to the society by taking up such initiatives,” said Ikyatha founder K.V. Sandeep Kumar.

Ikyatha, a forum of over 30 professionals coming from varied background, works for empowerment of children and women, education and environment.
