Rs.40 lakh for Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre

First instalment of Rs.15 lakh released


MADURAI: The Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has sanctioned Rs.40 lakh to establish an Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre in Chennai as an exclusive unit under the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology.

Patent Information Centres set up at five places in the State including Madurai would undertake awareness activities for industries and grass root innovators on patenting process for their products. Five clusters coming up in the State will be in Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore.

Official sources at the patent information centre told The Hindu here on Sunday that the Ministry had written a letter to Member Secretary of the Council, S. Vincent, asking him to take steps for setting up the Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre within next three months.

According to sources, the Ministry had released the first instalment of Rs.15 lakh to the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology on June 2 towards patent related activities.

As per the Ministry’s communication to patent information centre of the council this week, the council will be supported to employ human resources required for effective functioning of Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre. Product data will have to be collected from small industries.

Communication from the Union Ministry came from Anil Kumar, Deputy Director (Intellectual Property Rights), who informed that the Member Secretary of Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, Dr.Vincent, would be responsible for the day-to-day activities of the facilitation centre. A series of programmes on patenting process will be organised for innovators, small industries, Government officials, professionals and entrepreneurs.
