BHUBANESWAR: The city-folks on Sunday had the unique opportunity to experience the immensely popular jhumar dance and music, exclusive to the Kudumi community of Mayurbhanj district of the State. The cultural evening was organised at the Rabindra Mandap here by the Bhubaneswar Music Circle (BMC) as part of its series of programmes devised for promotion of the folk, tribal and dying arts – hitherto unusual to BMC’s scheme of hosting classical dance and music concerts. The series of events is being supported by the Department of Culture of the State government , informed BMC general secretary Khirod Patnaik. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Prabin Bhanjdeo who hails from the royal family of the erstwhile princely state of Mayurbhanj inaugurated the event and hailed BMC’s effort to familiarise the city folks with the rich and varied cultural heritage of the State. He further emphasised on promotion of the ethnic culture of various communities. Kudumali Cultural Association of Baripada staged the show that drew good crowd. Association secretary Chittaranjan Mohanty explained at the outset how jhumar songs have been an integral part of the Kudumi life and society and life for centuries. He also explained that jhumar songs are based on classical ragas despite being practiced by the masses.
