Project will cost Rs. 103 crore Nirmiti Kendra is executing the work
In progress: Workers at the site where the sports hostel is coming up in Hassan. HASSAN: Work on a Rs. 103-crore sports hostel is on in full swing at the district stadium in Hassan. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 2009 and will admit 50 boys and 50 girls who seek training in sports. Deputy Commissioner Naveen Raj Singh is monitoring work on the project, which has been entrusted to the Nirmiti Kendra. The building will have two storeys and will be spread across 470 sq.m. of land. There are six such sports hostels in the State including ones at Chikmagalur, Kolar, Haveri and Bagalkot. All these hostels have only a 50-student capacity, but the one here will have double that. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Singh said that in each room, 10 students would be accommodated. There would be a spacious sports hall, a gymnasium as well as a solar water heating system. Despite work on the project under way, 23 students have already been admitted. Mr. Singh said a selection committee would visit each school to assess the physical abilities of students who were in the fourth standard. They would be admitted to the sports hostel in their fifth standard and trained for three years in games and physical fitness. Mr. Singh said that a proposal had been sent to the State Government seeking sanction of Rs. 2.6 crore to construct an outdoor stadium here. There would be badminton and tennis courts, a basketball court and a skating ring too. He said that there was an athletic track inside the district stadium which would be developed. Everyday 300 people were using this track for their jogs and runs. More facilities would be provided keeping in view the expected increase in population here within the next two-year period, he added.
