dated June 9, 1959: Role of Press and TV

The Commonwealth Press Union at the opening of its three-day conference in London on June 8 heard proposals that a study should be made on problems in relations between Television and the Press including the effect on newspaper revenues. The Union which represents more than 500 newspapers and news services celebrates its golden jubilee this year. Sir Harry Brittain, the founder of the Union, delivered the opening address before editors, owners, publishers and correspondents from all parts of the Commonwealth. Mr. Geoffrey Cox, Editor, Independent Television and News, in opening a discussion on “The Press and Television” said television was the partner and not the foe of the newspapers. The relation between Television and the Press was not necessarily antagonistic. “I am more and more convinced that all three forms of dissemination of news – the written world, the broadcast world and television – each has its own individual role to play, each its strength and its own weakness.” Mr. Stuart Hood, Chief Editor of the BBC television news, prophesied big technical advances in the field of picture transmission.
