GOOD PERFORMANCE: Toppers in Standard X examinations with laptops, at the Secretariat in Chennai on Monday. CHENNAI: The State government has increased the size of cash prizes for the top rankers in the Class X public examination. From this year, the first three rank-holders will get Rs. 25,000, Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 15,000 respectively. Till now, they were given Rs. 7,500, Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 5,000. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi ordered the increase, an official release issued on Monday. The scheme covers those who secured the first three ranks at the State and district level. Such students should have taken Tamil as first language. The government would also bear the expenses of the students for higher studies. At the Secretariat, Mr. Karunanidhi presented cheques to nine such students. Hitherto, the scheme did not cover rank-holders in the Matriculation stream. From now, they would also be given cash prizes. Mr. Karunanidhi handed over cheques to four students who took the first three slots in the examination and took Tamil as first language. The total amount of the cash prizes was Rs. 2.45 lakh, the release said. LaptopsThe Chief Minister inaugurated the scheme of presenting laptops to 1,000 students who scored high marks in the Class X examination with Tamil as the medium of instruction. He gave away laptops to 10 students from Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. One thousand and one hundred students who secured 1,000 ranks were being given laptops at a cost of about Rs. 3.26 crore, the release added. Thangam Thennarasu, School Education Minister, was present on the occasion.
