Zoo felicitates B.K.S. Iyengar

He has donated

Rs. 20 lakh towards animal welfare


MYSORE: The Mysore zoo on Tuesday felicitated Yoga exponent B.K.S. Iyengar for his contribution of Rs.20 lakh towards animal welfare.

Mr. Iyengar had donated the money during his last visit to the city in December. The money will be kept in a fixed deposit and the interest accruing from it will be used towards animal welfare, according to the zoo authorities.

Mr. Iyengar has also adopted a tiger and a cub, Brahma and Anusuya, by remitting Rs.1.2 lakh towards the annual maintenance of the tiger. The donation was in memory of his wife Ramamani Sunderaj Iyengar, who died in 1973.

Executive director of Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens Vijay Ranjan Singh said that they wanted to felicitate Mr. Iyengar for his munificence. He said that his action would send a strong message of animal conservation to the public.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Iyengar lamented the destruction of the environment. He said that society was witnessing the decline of flora and fauna. The tiger population in the country was declining and it was important that all animals and birds were conserved.

The donation of Rs. 20 lakh is reckoned to be the highest amount given in the in the history of Indian zoos. Mr.Iyengar was presented a traditional shawl and a Mysore peta.
