Australia will act, says Anand Sharma

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: India has been informed that Australia is determined to take firm and effective action to ensure the security of Indian students in that country.

A message to this effect was conveyed to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma by Australian Trade Minister Simon Crean in Bali earlier this week.

The two leaders briefly discussed the students’ issue when they held trade talks on the sidelines of a meeting of the Cairns Group in the Indonesian island resort.

India was a special invitee to the meeting that concluded on Tuesday. The Cairns Group of agricultural exporting countries, chaired by Australia, is now focussed on the Doha Round of global trade talks.

Serious concern

Mr. Sharma told The Hindu over the telephone from Bali on Tuesday that Mr. Crean expressed serious concern, disappointment, and sadness over the recent attacks on Indian students in his country.
