Venting ire: Juniors doctors at Gandhi Hospital on a flash strike. HYDERABAD: The death of a pregnant woman in the early hours of Wednesday at Gandhi Hospital set off a series of events that eventually led to a flash strike by hospital medicos. The hospital’s post-graduates were demanding the arrest of the relatives of the pregnant woman, who apparently ransacked and assaulted the doctors in the labour room, after her death. While the attackers alleged that the woman died due to medical negligence, the hospital authorities, however, maintained that the woman died of complications, because of a dead foetus. The attackers, according to authorities, ransacked the labour room, damaged furniture and medical equipment. The medicos were also beaten up badly. The attack provoked the 270-odd medicos of the hospital to go on a flash strike. Save for emergency services, all other services, including out-patient and in-patient services were boycotted. The 28-year-old woman, Shahjahan Begum, was a resident of Bahadurpura and a mother of three. She was brought in a critical condition to the hospital on Tuesday evening. Doctors said that the foetus was already dead and in such cases it was normal for complications to occur. “The foetus was dead and she was bleeding. The duty doctors had informed her relatives about her critical condition and the risks involved". said in-charge superintendent of Gandhi Hospital B. Bala Nageswari. Meanwhile, the medicos took up a dharna and demanded that the police invoke the ordinance and arrest the attackers.
