‘Closure of depots will hit PDS’

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Railways’ move to close down some of the foodgrain depots in the State will affect the public distribution system (PDS), Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran has said.

The Minister said in a statement here on Wednesday that the Railways had cancelled the Angadippuram depot from where ration articles were being distributed in Malappuram district.

The issue had been brought to the notice of the Union Ministers of Railways and Agriculture but more depots are likely to be closed, the Minister said.

The General Manager of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) had informed the State government that the Railways proposed to close down the Chingavanam, West Hill, Kollam, Alappuzha, Mavelikara, Kuttippuram and Chalakkudy depots.

Ration distribution in the district would come to a halt if the Kuttippuram depot, the one remaining in Malappuram district, is closed down.

Mr. Divakaran complained that the Railways had also redirected supplies disregarding low levels of stocks in Kollam and Alappuzha.
