NEW DELHI: Tata Teleservices Ltd. (TTSL) on Wednesday said it planned to launch GSM service later this month in the South in partnership with Japanese telecom major NTT DoCoMo, which has 26 per cent stake in TTSL.

Stating that their pan-India GSM service would be branded ‘Tata DoCoMo’ and powered with cutting-edge technology support from its Japanese partner, TTSL Managing Director Anil Sardana said they would be investing $2 billion in rolling out the operations, which would be launched in western and northern States after the launch in the southern region.

“Tata DoCoMo will bring products and services that will redefine the Indian telecom experience. Our pan-India rollout should be completed this year,” Mr. Sardana added.

TTSL, which now offers mobile services on the CDMA platform, will become the second telecom operator after Reliance Communications to offer both GSM and CDMA mobile services. Tata DoCoMo has received licences to operate GSM services in 19 telecom circles.

NTT DoCoMo Senior Vice-President and Managing Director (Global Business Division) Toshinari Kunieda said: “They are providing technical inputs to make their GSM network world-class. We will launch all leading products and services in India that we offer in Japan. We are closely working with TTSL on future technologies like 3G and long-term evolution (LTE).” He also said the Japanese company has no plans to raise its stake in TTSL.
