Honda launches premium hatchback Jazz

Plans to invest Rs. 1,000 cr in the Rajasthan unit

NEW DELHI: Japanese car major Honda on Wednesday launched its premium hatchback Jazz in India, loaded with the latest safety, comfort and luxury features.

Priced between Rs. 6.98 lakh and Rs. 7.33 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), Jazz comes in three variants and is equipped with Euro-IV compatible 1.2 litre petrol engine, giving mileage of 16.1 km a litre (under test conditions).

“Specially designed for the Indian market, the newly-developed four-cylinder i-VTEC engine features ‘programmed fuel injection’ that delivers the maximum output of 90 PS (power). Jazz is available in five-speed manual transmission with gear ratios optimised for a sporty driving experience, while ensuring good fuel economy,” Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) President and CEO Masahiro Takedagawa said here after unveiling the hatchback.

Jazz, which has 77 per cent localisation of contents, would initially be produced at the HSCI’s Greater Noida facility and later shifted to its under-construction plant at Tapukara in Rajasthan where it plans to invest Rs. 1,000-crore.

Stating that Jazz would create an all-new segment in the India car market, Mr. Takedagawa said it would not affect the sales of its popular sedan City.

“We hope to sell at least 2,500 Jazz every month, while this year we hope to clock double-digit growth,” he said. Honda City that has been registering a 20 per cent growth sells around 5,000 units a month.
