Nothing amazing has happened, says Achuthanandan
Special Correspondent
Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The divergent positions of the Kerala unit of the CPI (M) and Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan over Governor R.S. Gavai’s decision to sanction prosecution of State party secretary and former Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the SNC-Lavalin case came to the fore on Wednesday with the Chief Minister virtually giving the Governor a clean chit.
Replying to questions at his weekly Cabinet briefing here, Mr. Achuthanandan said Governors had the discretionary power to arrive at their own decisions in such cases and there was, therefore, nothing amazing about Mr. Gavai’s decision.
“In similar cases, some Governors have used their discretionary powers to study and examine the circumstances of such cases and arrived at similar decisions. There are also precedents of the Supreme Court having endorsed such decisions. So I don’t think something amazing has happened here as you people say,” he stated.
He was responding to a query whether Mr. Gavai’s action amounted to breach of constitutional principles as alleged by the CPI(M) leadership which has described the Governor’s decision ‘politically motivated’.
