Two-wheeler workshop owners allege police harassment

Tirupur: Owners of two-wheeler workshops, affiliated to Two-Wheeler Vehicle Owners Association (TWVOA), submitted a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police, S. Santhi, alleging frequent harassment from police.

They told the SP that in the pretext of inquiring motorcycle thefts taking place in Tirupur and nearby Erode districts, police officials had been constantly picking up two-wheeler mechanics to far away police stations for “questioning”.

The owners alleged that they were forced to “shell out cash” to the investigating officials on many occasions.A few hours after meeting the SP, an owner of mechanic shop allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison creating flutter in the town.

He consumed toxic substances at Lakshmi Nagar and was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital.

According to TWVOA sources, he was ‘mentally tortured’ by officials of a police station in Erode district, where he was once taken for questioning, after they came to know that he was one among those who had submitted the memorandum to the Superintendent of Police.

Retired school HM robbed

Some unidentified persons who came by a motorcycle allegedly robbed Rs 1.04 lakh from Nachimuthu (61), a retired school headmaster, at Madathukulam near here on Tuesday night.

Police sources said the complainant had drawn the cash from Indian Overseas Bank, Kaniyur branch, in the afternoon and was on his way back home when the incident took place. The accused took away the cash when Nachimuthu was getting down from his two-wheeler.
