IUML committed to secular India: Ahamed

Special Correspondent

He dismisses reports of rifts with Railway Minister

CHENNAI: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) was committed to secular India where there was encouragement for bringing the Muslim community into the national mainstream, said E. Ahamed, party’s national president, here on Wednesday.

Speaking at a meeting at the party office, he said the IUML was the only legitimate representative of the Muslim community and that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was the only political entity that worked for the welfare of the community.

The Minister of State for Railways commended the Congress for its implementation of some of the Sachar Committee recommendations. He had been assured that the recommendations would soon be fully implemented. Mr. Ahamed dismissed reports of rifts with Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and said that the Railway Budget would look at balancing the needs of the country as a whole with emphasis on projects being implemented in areas where there were drawbacks.
