Polluters warned
Staff Reporter
KARUR: Stringent criminal penal action will be taken against those found discharging polluting substances into the river systems and water sources in the State, according to PWD Minister Durai Murugan.
Addressing the media here on Wednesday after reviewing the progress of barrage construction across the Cauvery at Kattalai in Karur district, he said that the polluters spoil fertile agricultural lands, drinking water wells along the banks of rivers and cause havoc on the ecology through their unpardonable crime. That would tantamount to anti-social activity and should be dealt with accordingly.
Reiterating that the Mullaperiyar Dam was safe, Mr. Durai Murugan expressed the hope that the Supreme Court would be appreciative of Tamil Nadu government’s arguments before the court in that regard and grant the go-ahead for raising the dam level to 142 feet from the present 136 feet.
When experts themselves were satisfied with the dam security and had taken into confidence all stake holders during its review, Kerala’s attitude was surprising, he said. “We are confident that the Supreme Court would see merit in our case and come to our rescue,” he said.
