VILLUPURAM: G. Saradambal (74), wife of former Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University A. Gnanam (77), was murdered in her farm house on Tuesday. The police have arrested watchman S.Vijayan.

Mr. Gnanam went out for a stroll and on his return he found his wife lying in a pool of blood on the first floor.

Bleeding injuries were found on the head and in the neck. Her mangal sutra weighing nine sovereigns and a three-sovereign gold chain were missing. Superintendent of Police A. Amalraj and Deputy Superintendent of Police Govindaraj rushed to the spot. The police, on suspicion, nabbed the watchman and on interrogation he confessed to having committed the crime. Vijayan demanded some money from Saradambal but she did not oblige. So he killed her.
