THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday decided to impose a ban on mechanised trawling in the ‘coastal seas’ from June 15 to July 31 for conservation of fish resources. It also decided to extend the moratorium on recovery of loans taken by fishermen up to November 1. Briefing presspersons here, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said free ration would be provided to fishermen affected by the ban. Workers of mechanised trawlers, peeling sheds and fishing harbours would get the ration during the period and Rs. 50 lakh had been allocated for the purpose. (The ban is being imposed as the monsoon is the breeding season of several varieties of fish.)
