DHARWAD: The in-charge president of the Dharwad Zilla Panchayat, Geeta Marilingannavar, has asked implementation officials to extend cooperation for effective implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

Inaugurating the one-day workshop on NREGS for the taluk and district-level implementation officers, organised by the zilla panchayat here on Thursday, she called upon the officials to actively involve themselves in the implementation of the “ambitious” scheme so that Dharwad emerged as a model district.

Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat C. Shikha said that the Union Government had released Rs. 70 crore for implementation of the NREGS during the current financial year and asked the officials to ensure proper utilisation of the funds. She said that guidelines of the scheme had been relaxed with provision for extending the scheme to major irrigational and horticultural projects. Of the 79,000 families registered under the scheme, 77,000 families had been issued job cards, she said.

Ms. Shikha said that the scheme was being effectively implemented in Kalaghatagi taluk and hoped it would be followed by other taluks.

Various resource persons spoke on the objectives, implementation and problems likely to be faced during implementation of the scheme.
