Mahakumbabishekam held in Alankudi

HOLY: Mahakumbhabishekam of Sri Aabathsahayeswarar Swamy Temple (Gurusthalam), in Alankudi near Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district, in progress on Thursday. —

TIRUVARUR: Mahakumbabishekam of Sri Apathsahayeswaraswamy temple, Navagrah Kshetra for Guru Bhagawan at Alankudi near Needamngalam on Kumbakonam-Manargudi road in Tiruvarur district, was held on Thursday.

Thousands of people witnessed the Kumbabishekam which took place between 10 a.m.and 11 a.m. Gadams were taken in procession from the yagasala and holy water was poured over the Kalasams of Rajagopuram and Vimanas.M.Chandrasekar, Tiruvarur district collector and others participated in the Kumbabishekam.

Elaborate bandobust arrangements were made by the police and special buses were operated by the Transport corporation for the benefit of devotees. Annadhanam was done at many places.

Guru Bhagawan called as Dakshinamurthy and Brahaspathi is seen on the southern side of the temple. Being the Navagrah kshetra for Guru Bhagawan, lakhs of people throng the temple during Guru Peryarchi every year.The Lord is called Apathsahayeswaraswamy. Legend has it that he took the poison which came from snake Vasuki while Devas and Asuras churned Thiruparkadal using the snake Vasuki.

As he took the poison (Alakalam-poison) the place is called Alankudi and the Lord Apathsahayeswaraswamy. Guru Bhagawan is considered the Lord of Dhanusu. Yellow clothes, pushparagm stone and white mullai flowers are offered to the Lord.

Mahkumbabishekam of Sri Prathyankara Devi temple at Ayyawadi near Kumbakonam was also held on Thursday. Thousands of people witnessed the Kumbabishekam.
