TIRUCHI: A sharp downpour on Thursday evening brought much needed relief from the sweltering heat in the city. With the summer heat showing no signs of abating over the past week when the mercury continued to hover around 40 degree Celsius. The rains, lasting nearly an hour, brought cheer to the residents and raised expectations of relief from the long summer. Motorists, though caught unawares, did not seem to mind being drenched. Farmers of the district, especially those who have raised cash crops, also hope for some sustained rains. The delay in the opening of the Mettur reservoir for irrigation has raised apprehensions over the fate of the crops and farmers were pinning their hopes on monsoon rains.
