JAIPUR: The high-power V. S. Vyas Committee appointed by the Rajasthan Government to select the sites for Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and other premier institutions in the State has recommended that the engineering institute be set up in Jodhpur and the management school in Udaipur. Report submittedThe committee, headed by noted economist V. S. Vyas, submitted its report to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot here on Wednesday. The State Government is likely to forward the recommendations without any changes to the Centre for its consideration. While IIT-Rajasthan has already started functioning on the IIT-Kanpur campus, the committee rejected Kota as a possible choice for finally locating the premier engineering institute. The capital city of Jaipur too did not find favour with the committee ostensibly because it has a surfeit of educational institutions, including private engineering colleges. The previous BJP-led Government in the State had suggested that IIT-Rajasthan be set up in Kota, but the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development rejected it in view of a large number of coaching centres operating in the city. After the change of government in the State, Jodhpur – the hometown as well as the constituency of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot – has emerged as the city of choice.
