CHENNAI: A. Shankar of Railways beat P. Phoobalan with the black pieces to move into sole lead at the end of the ninth and penultimate round in the Manali International FIDE-rating chess tournament played near here on Thursday. Shankar leads with eight points from nine games and is followed by R. Balasubramaniam, P. Lokesh and J. Arun on 7.5 points. The final round remains to be played on Friday. Shankar won in 57 moves by using the king’s Indian defence to open a slender half-point lead. Top seed R. Balasubramaniam of ICF clawed back to joint second place with an endgame win. Bala will have black against Shankar in the final round of this Rs.1 lakh prize money event sponsored by Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited. Important results (ninth round): P. Phoobalan 7 lost to A. Shankar 8, P. Lokesh 7.5 drew with J. Arun 7.5, R. Balasubramaniam 7.5 bt M. Vinoth Kumar 6.5, K. Gunasekaran 6.5 drew with Shreyans Shah 7, Pradeep Kumar 7 bt S.
