BERHAMPUR: Non-iodised salt is being sold openly in the city as well as rural areas of Ganjam district. The unscrupulous traders are cashing in on the traditional belief of women to market the non-iodised granular salt. One can easily find cycle rickshaw trolleys loaded with iodised powder salt packets and gunny bags of granular salt moving around the streets of the city. These salt sellers are also seen in rural areas of Ganjam district. If one sees closely, then one can see that the granular salt being sold to households is meant for industrial use and veterinary use. It is clearly written on the gunny bags. Yet it is being sold in the open and the gullible customers buy it out of traditional link. Septuagenarian Sushama Mishra said she buys granular salt as since childhood she is acquainted with the use of granular salt during cooking. “I make mistakes in assessment when I use powdered salt,” she said. Ignorance also plays a major role in the marketing of non-iodised salt. Despite much advertisement, the buyers of this non-iodised salt were ignorant of the benefits of iodised salt. The sellers, however, at times say that the iodised powdered salt is less tasty than the non-iodised granular salt. The irony is that this sale of non-iodised salt is continuing openly in Ganjam district which is a major producer of salt in Orissa. The Huma-Binchanapalli Salt Producers Cooperative also produces granular iodised salt.
