‘No need for Congress to forge alliance for civic polls’

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president D. Srinivas has said he saw no reason why the party should forge alliance with other political parties for the municipal elections.

“We have won the recent general elections on our own strength. The party went ahead with a challenging tone that it would return to power comfortably, which was proved correct,” Mr. Srinivas said in reply to a question at a press conference here on Friday.

Asked about the possibility of Praja Rajyam and Telugu Desam Party joining hands, he said it was for the two parties to decide whether Chiranjeevi or N. Chandrababu Naidu would become Chief Minister after 10 years.

He said there was no need for the party to join hands with the MIM in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections. “But, any decision will be taken in consultation with the Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the high command,” he said.

He stated that only the All-India Congress Committee was empowered to initiate disciplinary action against party seniors like Ministers, legislators and parliamentarians besides former Chief Ministers.

The screening and enquiry committee of the APCC may not summon the senior leaders in wake of complaints received against them for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities to sabotage the chances of official candidates in the recent elections, Mr. Srinivas said.

He said the panel was looking into all issues before initiating disciplinary action. Asked if the seniors would be summoned, he said all such cases would be referred to the AICC.

Mr. Srinivas expressed displeasure at the proceedings of the enquiry panel finding its way to the television channels and said hence forth all the sittings would be in camera.

Asked about complaints against the District Congress Committee presidents, he said the APCC would deal with it case by case. He said there was no move to revamp the DCCs.
