Maths should create awareness: Palemar

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Minister for Environment Krishna J. Palemar has called upon maths and religious institutions to spread the message of environment conservation among the general public.

Speaking at a function organised to give away the Karnataka State Environment Awards 2009 in Bangalore on Thursday, Mr. Palemar said maths and religious institutions, which were revered by the general public, should also create awareness about conservation. He noted that offering prayers to nature had been part of Hindu tradition.

Mr. Palemar even warned people that society would have to contend with newer diseases if the environment continued to be harmed.

“We had never heard of swine flu, bird flu, chikungunya, dengue and other diseases before. All this is due to environmental degradation,” he said.

The Minister regretted the opposition to the steps taken by the Government to protect the environment.

Chairman of Western Ghats Conservation Task Force Ananth Hegde Ashisara said the Government was planning to take up a massive sapling plantation programme all over the State from June 18 and called upon the people, particularly children, to participate in it in large numbers.

Chairman of the Task Force on Bio-fuel Y.V. Ramakrishna said the climate change should serve as a warning to the nearly seven billion people, who inhabit the earth.
