JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has announced establishment of a Road Safety Council to tackle the increasing incidences of road accidents with a large number of casualties in the State. The State Council, to be on the lines of the National Road Safety Council, is to be set up under Section 215 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. It will have the State’s Transport Minister as the chairperson. The main agenda before the Council would be removal of the reasons behind the road mishaps which are claiming a large number of lives every year in the State. The announcement comes in the wake of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressing serious concern over the road accidents in Rajasthan, a State known for better roads. The proposed 18-member Council, with the Transport Commissioner and the Transport Secretary as its members, will be asked to look into all aspects of road safety including the structure of the roads coming under the national highways and the State highways as well as the availability of immediate first aid and quick medical attention to the victims of road accidents. The Council is expected to evolve strategies for better road safety in Rajasthan, along with improved traffic sense among drivers and pedestrians besides making available emergency services including trauma hospitals along the highways and ambulances. It will have the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, Managing Director of the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation, Additional Director-General of Police (Traffic) and Controller, State Motor Garage, as members.
