Attacks unfortunate: Steve Waugh

Kunal Diwan

NEW DELHI: The former Australian cricket captain, Steve Waugh, has said that he was shocked by the reports about the recent spate of attacks on Indian students in Australia and called for an end to the “unfortunate chain of events.”

In a statement released on behalf of his charity, the Steve Waugh Foundation, here on Friday, Mr. Waugh expressed sadness over the targeting of Indian students. “I have worked with young people in both India and Australia over many years and only heard positive reports of their experiences in either country.

“Our countries have always enjoyed strong and excellent relations, especially through cricket, sport and business.”

The cricketing legend emphasised the need to ensure greater safety for students on foreign soil, stating that the well being of any young person in an alien country was of “paramount concern.”

On Thursday, former Aussie wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist urged Indians to continue studying in Australia. “I have spent time on the University of Wollongong campus walking around and meeting Indian students and all of them loved studying and living there. I still believe it is a great option for international students,” he said.
