TAMBARAM: The Hindu - Newspaper in Education (NIE) Programme for the 2009-2010 academic year was launched on Friday with speakers at the function urging students to cultivate the habit of reading.

The inaugural function was held at the Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Indira Nagar, Selaiyur, near Tambaram, by Sunil Kumar, Inspector-General of Police and Joint Director, Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. A large gathering of school students participated in the function.

Mr. Sunil Kumar first asked the gathering of students, how many among them had the habit of reading newspapers in the morning as soon as they woke up. The response was encouraging with nearly all of them raising their hands. “Good. Those few who do not have the habit, start from Saturday as it is a good day to make a beginning,” he remarked.

Recalling his student days and also the period when he was preparing for the Civil Services Examinations, Mr. Sunil Kumar said that only 50 per cent of general information came from books, while the rest came from newspapers. Continuing to speak about competitive examinations, particularly those conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for the different civil services, he said that one-third of the questions would pertain to general knowledge for which aspirants had to depend on newspapers.

The senior police officer also urged students to take a firm resolve and prepare for the coveted civil services. He recalled that earlier, a large number of successful candidates in the various central civil services used to be from Tamil Nadu. While this went down drastically, things were improving over the past few years. “Last year 80 men and women from Tamil Nadu have made it to different central services,” Mr. Sunil Kumar said, while lauding the school management for tying up with The Hindu under the NIE Programme.

Speaking on the occasion, N. Vijayan, Principal and Correspondent of the school, said that if the habit of newspaper reading was cultivated in their daily lives, students would certainly have an edge over others. Reading the newspaper on a daily basis would help them improve their knowledge and keep them updated with current trends in different walks of life. In the southern suburbs of Chennai, the Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School is the biggest partner in The Hindu NIE programme.

Speaking on the occasion, S. Sridhar, Assistant Regional General Manager, Circulation, said The Hindu - NIE programme started in 2004 with 22 schools and covers more than 2 lakh students in classes VI to X. The objective was to inculcate the reading habit among students, particularly of newspapers.

Apart from conducting sessions every month for NIE partner schools, various other activities such as IQ contests, speed reading tests, science festivals, workshop for teachers and Young World Quiz and Painting events are also organised.
