Spices Board to implement pepper replanting programme

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: Spices Board will implement a rejuvenation programme for pepper in Idukki district soon. The scheme is to replant old and senile pepper vines with high yielding ones. Board chairman V.J. Kurien said the board got the approval of the National Horticulture Mission under the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation. Under the programme, a subsidy of Rs.28 would be given to replant two pepper vines. The subsidy would be given in two instalments of Rs.16 by November-December 2009 and Rs.12 by September-October 2010 for replanting done during the 2009 planting season.

In order to identify the eligible planters, a survey would be conducted in all the households in Idukki district. In the first phase, the survey would be confined to six villages.

Mr. Kurien said work on the spice park in Idukki was in progress. Since the State government failed to provide land for the spice park, the board took possession of 12.50 acres of land in Idukki to operate a park for processing of cardamom and pepper. The first Spices Park with facilities for cleaning, grading, processing and packing started functioning at Chindwara in Madhya Pradesh. It was mainly for garlic and chilly processing. The park for chillies and turmeric will be set up at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.
