KULITHALAI: While the Centre and the States have been extending benefits to the deprived and downtrodden sections of society, a lot more needs to be done to help them lead a normal life, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment D. Napoleon said on Saturday. “We will strive to uplift their social standing,” Mr. Napoleon said after distributing free colour television sets to beneficiaries at a function held at Pothuravuthanpatti in Karur district. Mr. Napoleon said his duties required him to understand the needs and claims of various groups of deprived sections of society, including persons with disabilities, senior citizens, the weaker sections and those who are socially backward. It was felt that a lot more needed to be done to help the deprived and weaker sections of society. Schemes would be drawn up for their benefit and he would ensure that they reached the needy through proper monitoring of welfare programmes, Mr. Napoleon said. He expressed his gratitude to the people of Perambalur for electing him and said he would try to bring some industries to the region to bolster the economy. The Minister handed over a Braille watch to a Class X student. MLAs P. Kamaraj (Krishnarayapuram) and R. Manikkam (Kulithalai), and District Collector (in charge) C. Munirathinam and other officials participated.
