K.P.S. Gill ready to cooperate

Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI: K.P.S. Gill has sought to “cooperate” with the newly formed Hockey India and break the “deadlock” relating to the administration of the game.

The IHF, disaffiliated by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), has called a meeting of its state units here on Sunday and invited Hockey India to it. However, state units of the Indian Women’s Hockey Federation (IWHF) have not been invited for the meeting.

“With the World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games to be held next year, we can ill afford to waste time,” Mr. Gill said in a statement on Saturday.

“I do not stand on ego. For the improvement of the game, I am prepared to cooperate with anybody who has good things for Indian hockey at heart,” he said.

Hoping for a consensus

Mr. Gill hoped a consensus would evolve in Sunday’s meeting. “We do not want confrontation with Hockey India because the continued rift and impasse has adversely affected the game,” he said.

“I am confident that in Sunday’s meeting we will be able to reach at some understanding with Hockey India till the elections are held in six months time.”

Mr. Gill scotched rumours that he did not want the World Cup to be held in India. “We got the World Cup allotted to India and now we will not let it go anywhere,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, some state associations under the leadership of Bengal Hockey Association President J.B. Roy and IWHF Secretary Amrit Bose are planning to meet at Amby Valley, near Mumbai, on Sunday.
