Plus One students gravitate towards commerce stream

Staff Reporter

SATHYAMANGALAM: There is a conscious shift in Plus One students towards commerce stream, education consultant Jayaprakash A. Gandhi has said.

Talking to The Hindu on the sidelines of a function at the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology he said, “Plus One students in Chennai and other cities in the State have made a conscious decision in choosing commerce, as they feel they can achieve better.”

“Rather than being an engineer the students think they will be better placed as either a chartered account or company secretary,” he said.

Reasons

He attributed the reason to the effort the students put in to be an engineer vis-a-vis a chartered accountant or company secretary. It could also be because of the CA and ACS institutes’ deciding to give professional certificates for those who cleared the intermediate exam as against the earlier practice of rewarding only those who passed the final examination.

The other reason, according to Mr. Gandhi, was that the money the parents spent on CA, ICWA or ACS was less compared to engineering.

There was a similar movement towards basic sciences, particularly mathematics, he said and added that English was also fast emerging as a favourite choice.
