Guard held in burglary cases

Staff Reporter

Several mobile phones, purses and garments were stolen from a shopping mall

NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old security guard who allegedly struck twice at a shopping mall in Saket here along with his friends in the past six months and decamped with about mobile phones, purses and garments has been arrested.

Govind Kumar Karn, a resident of Sangam Vihar, was arrested on June 11 following a tip-off when he came to PVR Saket to sell some of the stolen mobile phones. The police claim to have seized 20 stolen mobile phones from him.

Govind, a science graduate from Darbhanga University, had come to the Capital in March last year and one of his friends, Sandeep, helped him get a job as a security guard in Tiger Security, a private security firm.

After Govind was deployed at Shoppers Stop showroom in the shopping mall last year, about 40 mobile phones, purses and garments were stolen from the shop on January 1.

On June 5, the burglars struck again in the same showroom and made off with 19 expensive mobile phones.

Taking up investigation, the police team developed sources and arrested Govind.

During interrogation, Govind purportedly told the police that he along with his friends Sandeep, Gautam and Sanjeev hatched a conspiracy to commit burglary in the showroom.

As per the plan, Govind took Gautam and Sandeep upstairs in the mall on January 1 night and the three broke open the glass door of the showroom and made off with mobile phones, purses and garments. Their fourth accomplice Sanjeev was keeping vigil in an auto-rickshaw outside the mall. On June 5, Govind struck again and allegedly stole 19 expensive mobile phones.

He kept the stolen mobile phones concealed in the security control room and took them to his house at different times by hiding in his clothes.

Five stolen mobile phones were allegedly seized at the time of his arrest. Fifteen other mobile phones were later recovered from his rented accommodation.

Govind hails from Samastipur in Bihar.
