Relief for medical students

HYDERABAD: Around 68 students pursuing MBBS and dental courses in various medical colleges under Dr. N.T.R. University of Health Sciences approached the High Court to write their first year examinations.

These students secured admissions in the “B” category seats and hail from the Backward Classes.

Addressing the media here on Sunday, several parents said that that the government had promised to pay the fee of students hailing from reserved categories with family income below Rs.1,00,00 per annum.

They were informed about the reimbursement during the counselling and based on that students got admitted in the medical courses.

However, with the final exams soon approaching, managements of certain colleges stopped students from appearing for the pre-final exams, saying that the exemption was applicable to only category ‘A’ seats for which the fee was lesser than “B” category seats.

“They said that we would be allowed to appear for the exam only if the whole amount was paid,” complained C. Santosh, a first year student from Kamineni Institute of Dental Sciences at Nalgonda.

The management maintained that they had not received the students’ fee from the government, he added.

With no help coming from the colleges and the government these students moved the High Court that gave an interim order to allow the students to write Dental and MBBS pre-final exams beginning Monday. The final exams are slated for June 23 and July 21 respectively, and the parents are apprehensive about the chances of their wards.

They demanded that the government take stern action against the medical and dental colleges if they fail to provide hall-tickets and also ensure that students are allowed to write the examinations.
