Awareness programmes intensified in Tiruchi

About the significance of ‘combination vaccines’

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu Chapter of Indian Academy of Paediatrics has intensified its awareness programmes for sensitising paediatricians and the masses about the significance of the ‘combination vaccines,’ which have been clinically effective, said its secretary, Major K. Nagaraju.

Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, Dr. Major Nagaraju said combination vaccines delivered various antigens in the recommended quantity and ensures timely immunisation. The chapter had initiated steps for creating awareness among the paediatrics about combination vaccines by organising continuing medical education programme and seminars in parts of the state.

Pamphlets explaining the concept were being distributed to the parents of infants visiting the private clinics and hospitals. The Union government had ordered the adoption of combination vaccine in 10 select states across the country, including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and New Delhi.

He said that the combination vaccine was convenient both for the physicians, the children and the parents. With reduction in cost towards transport and storage of the vaccines, it would also be cost effective, he added.

The Chairman and Managing Director of M/s Bharat Biotech International Limited, Hyderabad, Krishna M. Ella, said that on an average, about 25 million children were born every year in the country and the annual requirement of ‘Combination vaccine’ had been put at 100 million.
