Om Prakash wins bronze

New Delhi: Promising Indian shot putter Om Prakash Singh finished a creditable third with a personal best effort of 19.89m in an European Athletics Classic event in Istanbul.

The 22-year-old improved upon his earlier personal best of 19.74m which he recorded in the first leg of Indian Grand Prix in Kochi on May 3, by throwing the iron ball to 19.89m on Saturday.

His fine effort though fell one centimetre short of Berlin World championship (August 15-23) ‘B’ standard qualifying mark of 19.90m. He earned $1000 for his effort.

Hamza Alic of Bosnia-Herzegovina won the gold with a throw of 20.30m while Nedzad Mulabegovic of Croatia finished second with 20.01m.

In women’s discus, Krishna Poonia finished fifth, clearing a distance of 53.19m, an Athletics Federation of India release said. Poonia has already qualified for the Berlin World championships. — PTI
