MADURAI: An area of 1.47 acres; 400 out-patients a day on average; creating records in child deliveries; doctors/ nurses available all through the day; and local people happy with the healthcare. Despite such good statistics, the Tirupparankundram Primary Health Centre, which is in its 50th year, is presenting a sight of ‘condemned buildings’ and a PHC where there is sufficient land but no good buildings. During May, the Tirupparankundram PHC was the district topper in number of deliveries performed. “In our labour ward we have only three beds. Still, we had conducted 73 deliveries last month, including Caesareans,” says K. Bharathi, Block Medical Officer. There is lot of space unutilised in this PHC and its staff are looking up to donors for getting good buildings. They have appealed to the Health Department/ State Government to make it a 30-bedded hospital which makes it eligible for more infrastructure and doctors. According to Dr. Bharathi, the PHC requires more beds/ buildings because of the increasing number of deliveries every month. “Handling outpatients and delivery cases at a time is becoming difficult due to inadequate rooms. However, we are doing well due to the cooperation of staff nurses and other doctors,” she observed. Last month, 157 scans were done and 73 deliveries performed.
