P. Akash THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the State government comes close to announcing reforms in the engineering and medical entrance examinations, the candidate who scored the second rank in the engineering entrance examination opposes giving weightage to the marks scored in the qualifying examinations in determining the ranks. P. Akash, a student from Sarvodaya Vidyalaya at Nalanchira here, told The Hindu here on Monday that only the common entrance examination score should be considered. Akash had studied up to the 10th standard in the Indian Council of Secondary Examination syllabus and Plus Two in the Indian School Certificate stream. He said students who did their higher secondary courses in various syllabi appeared for the entrance examinations. Each syllabus had a different pattern of granting marks. So, if the marks scored in the qualifying examination were to be factored in, students from one stream or the other might get an unfair advantage. Asked about the ‘formula for equivalence’ suggested by the R.V.G. Menon committee on entrance examination reforms for balancing any such variations, Akash said no formula could do away with the differences. Akash prefers to join the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (Chennai). “I am looking to join the mechanical engineering course. If not, the aeronautical engineering course. In any case, I will only join the IIT, Chennai,” he said adding that he would not participate in the seat allotment process for engineering colleges in the State.
