On cricket

India’s exit from the ICC World Twenty20 championship will predictably result in hysterical responses and the hunt for scapegoats will begin. It is not a disgrace to lose closely-fought matches, especially in the T20 format, where luck often plays a disproportionately large role in deciding the outcome. Therefore, let us introspect and look for corrective steps. Key players have been prone to injuries in recent times. One reason is that Indian cricketers are playing too much cricket.

V.N. Mukundarajan,

Thiruvananthapuram

The IPL tournament was an excellent practice platform for the Indian players just before the World T20 championship but it also gave little time to the team to refresh. The tension among the players at the end of the IPL season was palpable. While the lack of time between the tournaments may not be the reason for being eliminated from the World T20, it certainly is a matter to be looked into by the IPL co-ordinators.

Melisha Robinson,

Chennai

The Indian team’s approach was lacklustre and its on-field performance was shoddy. It could not respond to the strategies used by the stronger teams. Its own game plan was easily read and countered by the opponents. A better planning of the cricket calendar, with sufficient time for players to physically and mentally prepare for the international tourneys, is a must.

William Nelson Anipay,

Visakhapatnam

Complacency, the Dhoni-Sehwag rift, injuries, poor form of players, excessive cricket, etc., are the reasons for India’s debacle in the T20 World Cup.

The defending champions failed miserably in all areas of the game. Too much of anything is not good. Cricket is no exception.

K. Pradeep,

Chennai

The IPL tournament which took place before the T20 World Cup took a heavy toll on the players’ zeal and enthusiasm. They looked tired and jaded, and did not play to their full potential.

C. Varadarajan,

Chennai

Team India has only itself to blame for the T20 debacle. Almost all the players began to acquire a larger-than-life image because of the people’s craze for cricket.

It is time the cricketers were banned from appearing in commercial ads. It has to be made clear to them that they too are ordinary men and can get respect only if they perform well.

Venkata Ramana Chary,

Adoni
