Letters to the Editor
It is heartening to find that The Hindu is consistent in providing access to its readers through the Readers’ Editor. K. Narayanan, the first Readers’ Editor, did a splendid job of responding to the sharp, critical and, at times, embarrassing interventions of readers. Farewell to Mr. Narayanan and welcome to S. Viswanathan to explore more innovative areas to reflect the readers’ genuine expectations. S.V. Venugopalan, Chennai Congratulations and welcome to Mr. Viswanathan, the new Readers’ Editor of The Hindu. I know that his in-depth articles in Frontline on the empowerment of Dalits and on the election of Dalits as panchayat presidents had a positive effect on the administration and NGOs in their fight against oppression. Mr. Narayanan, his predecessor, has set high standards for the post. One hopes he will continue to give his valuable advice to the new incumbent with his vast and rich experience in journalism.S. Nallasivan, Tirunelveli While welcoming Mr. Viswanathan, I must also say that readers will miss Mr. Narayanan. He was prompt in responding to readers’ comments. I am sure Mr. Viswanathan will continue to uphold the high standard of rectitude, politeness and courtesy which his predecessor brought to bear on a highly demanding job.C.P. Srinivasan, North Carolina Although the readers will miss Mr. Narayanan, they have no doubt that the excellent base he has created and the good guidelines he has formulated will help Mr. Viswanathan, another veteran journalist, to prove that he is the right successor.Fiona Waltair, Chennai
