Minimum wages for domestic help soon

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State government is planning to fix minimum wages for domestic help and an announcement would be made soon, T.M. Anbarasan, Labour Minister, said here on Monday.

After flagging off a mobile weighbridge testing unit at the DMS complex here, Mr. Anbarasan said at present a total of 35,000 people had enrolled as members in the Welfare Board created by the Labour Department. Fixing of minimum wages was their pending demand.

Talking about action taken against shops and eateries for not displaying names in Tamil, Mr. Anbarasan said last year inspections were conducted at nearly 1.67 lakh shops and more than 21,000 eateries. Discrepancies were found in 1,836 shops and 88 eateries. The department imposed a fine of Rs. 9,050 on shops and Rs. 550 on eateries. Following objections from the department, some shops and eateries changed the name boards. At present, a fine of Rs. 50 is being imposed on shops and eateries for not displaying names in Tamil. Soon the amount would be increased, he said.

On the weighbridge testing unit, Mr. Anbarasan said the Centre had gifted two mobile testing units to the State to ensure accurate calibration of weighbridges. Costing Rs.53 lakh each, the units would be based in Tiruvallur and Coimbatore districts, to be used in the nearby districts also. The State government had sanctioned funds to appoint their drivers and to meet fuel expenses, he said.
