Rural women get a feel of entrepreneurship

Exhibition features products made by self-help groups

EMPOWERMENT: Consumer and home-made products made by rural women at an exhibition organised in Madurai on Monday.

MADURAI: As part of educating the rural women who aspire to become entrepreneurs and make them get a feel of the transitional phase in entrepreneurship, an exhibition was organised here on Monday.

Homemade products and consumables, handicrafts, herbal medicines, clothes that were exclusively made by members of self-help groups and Madura Micro Finance Limited (MMFL) were displayed at the one-day exhibition held at Anna Nagar here .

The expo had a total number of 76 stalls and some of the products kept include herbal turmeric powder, home made jams and juices, decorative products made out of seashells. Rural women from Madurai, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Dindigul and Salem participated in the exhibition.

A group of women from Sambavar Vadakara in Tirunelveli have indigenously prepared sanitary napkins and have also given a brand name.

K. Manoharan, Assistant General Manager (Training), MMFL said that they were active in 29 districts (6,000 villages) in Tamil Nadu for the economic development of more than four lakh women and have 170 offices in various districts.

In Madurai district, the MMFL was functioning in 96 villages where 40,000 women from 2,500 groups benefited from their assistance.

MMFL not only lent group loans but also distributed individual loans to women who had a good track record with SHGs.

Madura Micro Finance Limited is a non-banking finance company, which aims to reach the rural women and make them avail the financial products said, B.S. Sampath Kumar, Senior Manager (Value Added Service), Microcredit Foundation of India.

Officials from MMFL said that they expect to conduct a weeklong exhibition in future and said that this event was a better learning experience.
