Cauvery water project to be completed in three months

DINDIGUL: A special Cauvery drinking water project meant for 735 rural habitations will be completed within three months. Seventy per cent of work was over and the rest was being expedited, said Minister for Revenue I Periasamy.

He was addressing a function at M. Ammapatti in Reddiyarchatram here on Sunday.

Of the total length of 56 kilometres, the main pipeline laying work was over up to 30 kilometres. Construction of overhead tanks and laying of drinking water pipelines at the beneficiary villages under the scheme were also finished, he added. “The main pipeline laying work is being executed in full swing.”

On completion of the project, residents at Vedasandur, Palayam, Oddanchatram, Sri Ramapuram and Kannivadi town panchayats will get 70 litres of drinking water a day and 735 rural habitations get 40 litres of water a day. A total of 3.5 lakh people will get protected drinking water under this scheme. Three ground-level tanks and six overhead tanks and two pressure reduction tanks were set up to streamline drinking water supply. Eight pumps will be used to get water from head works to beneficiary villages.

To solve persistent drinking water crisis in other parts of the district, the TWAD Board officials have plans to supply drinking water to Kasavanampatti and Konur panchayts from Nayodai Kombai. Feasibility study to include Ammpatti panchayat in this scheme was also under process, he added.

Later, the Minister distributed gas stoves to 465 beneficiaries at Ammapatti. District Revenue Officer K. Pechiammal presided over.
