‘VJT Hall must not be let out for fairs’

MLA writes to

Chief Minister

‘Event organisers damage structure’

Thiruvananthapuram: V. Sivankutty, MLA, has urged the government to stop letting out VJT Hall for sales fairs and exhibitions.

In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan, he said, “VJT Hall occupies a prominent place in the history of the State. The Sree Moolam Praja Sabha used to meet here. Over the years, the building has played host to tens of thousands of events, some of which have made history. That is the reason why it is still the preferred venue for meetings hosted by prominent social, cultural and educational organisations. The government has also declared it a protected archaeological monument. Yet, the General Administration department lets out the hall for any purpose with total disregard for its historical importance”.

Mr. Sivankutty said that the hall was occupied for the most part of the year by fairs and exhibitions organised by government and private organisations.

“The organisers of these events cause damage to the structure at times,” he pointed out. He stressed the need to constitute an advisory committee comprising elected representatives, cultural leaders and officials to maintain the building and its premises.
