Padma awardees honoured
CHENNAI: The Asan Memorial Association on Monday felicitated this year’s Padma Bhushan awardees Shanta and V.P. Dhananjayan and Padmashree awardee cardiologist G. Vijayaraghavan.
Literary critic M.K. Sanu said the dancer duo’s contributions to classical dance stood tall in an era of rampant westernisation of culture. Poet Sugathakumari called for introspection among Malayalis who, she feared, were drifting away from the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru and their mother tongue.
Mr. Dhananjayan said it was the greatness of Bharatanatyam that was exemplified in his emergence from humble origins in Payyannur to the stature of a dancer. Dr. Vijayaraghavan said there would always be patrons for good Malayalam literature. — Special Correspondent
